After a slow start to the season, we were delighted to see visitors flocking back to South Devon in July and August. Salcombe slowly began to feel like it’s old self again, with boats whizzing around in the harbour and the beaches full of holidaymakers and locals alike, enjoying the sand between their toes and the glorious feeling of having home schooling and lockdown stresses behind them. Dartmouth Parlour has been busy with customers enjoying the “dishy Richi” deal, and Kingsbridge cabin has been inundated with families crabbing alongside the newly built quay and gardens.

As many of our retail, pub and restaurant customers reopened after the long break, the heatwave encouraged consumers to return to old habits and venture out again. We have been delighted to support customers with orders and our team were happy to be delivering ice cream across the country again.

When Salcombe Dairy began making ice cream in the 1970’s, the concept of making an ice cream without Devon milk and cream fresh from the farm was simply not on the radar…

Forty years on, the ‘free from’ trend has led to a healthy demand in products without allergens – but still with very high great taste expectations. After a year in development, Salcombe Dairy are excited to be launching two new dairy-free ice creams: Rainforest Nectar and Cloudforest Cacao, both suitable for vegans.

It took us a long time to work out how to achieve a fabulously creamy taste and a beautifully smooth texture for the new dairy-free flavours. We wanted to ensure the new dairy-free products were amazing ice creams in their own right, as well as being plant based, dairy-free and vegan friendly. Quite a tall order – as some free-from foods can sometimes taste like inferior, cardboard versions of the ‘real’ thing! But after much trial and error, some investment in new machinery, and a lot of skill and patience from our amazing factory team, we’re proud of the two new flavours.

Rainforest Nectar is a taste sensation of passionfruit, mango, lime and coconut and was inspired by a recent trip to Cambodia. It has a very fresh but creamy taste.

Cloudforest Cacao is a rich blend of coconut cream and our own bean-to- bar chocolate. Both ice creams are made in Salcombe. To ask for samples, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. Currently available in 2L and 5L containers for trade customers, as well as in Salcombe Dairy shops In Salcombe, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge.
