As the saying goes - many hands make light work. And this community spirit was alive and kicking in a steep, windy field above the Salcombe Estuary this week, when volunteers came together to pull fibre optic cables out of the grass and fix glass light bulbs to each one. All 30,000 of them. Mad? Yes. Why? For art, and charity.
To celebrate the RNLI’s 200th Anniversary, globally acclaimed artist Bruce Munroe (he who created the famous light installation at Uluru in Australia) decided to create a similar one in South Devon. As you do when you grow up South Devon and feel an affinity towards the place. Lucky us South Hams residents who will have this beautiful creation on our doorstep, eh...
So the Salcombe Dairy team decided to get stuck in and join the RNLI volunteers, local residents and Bruce’s team who were transforming the ordinary grass fields into an extraordinary piece of art:
The big switch on of the Field of Light will be at 18.24 precisely on Saturday 5th October. Why so precise on timing? As that’s when the RNLI was founded two hundred years ago.
As a business which flourishes in the summer, Salcombe Dairy tries very hard to keep our staff busy though the dark and stormy winter months by making chocolate instead of ice cream. We believe this is a sustainable thing to do in an otherwise seasonal location. So, we were honoured to be part of a beautiful idea to bring light and add cheer to Salcombe in winter, as the Field of Light will be glowing every night from this Saturday until January.

To peruse our bean-to-bar chocolate gift hampers, chocolate bars, truffles or warming hot chocolate do pop in and see us on Island Street in Salcombe, or visit our online store. You can see all of our chocolate being made in our Salcombe factory from organic, Peruvian cacao. You can also order our Devonshire ice cream - delivered to your door even, anywhere in mainland UK.
We look forward to welcoming you to Salcombe and to the Field of Light.
